Do I have any advice for people wanting to start a clothing brand?
I actually get asked this question pretty often and the short answer is: yes, I do.
First off, know what you want your clothing brand to be.
Have other brands that you like and take inspiration from them—but don’t just dive in and start spending money straight away. That’s the mistake most people make.
Instead, start by drawing it out. Visualise the idea.
Put the design on paper—or screen—and go show your family and friends. Show your peers. See what the reaction is. If people genuinely like it, then it’s time to take the next step.
Make a sample.
Then show that to more people. See what lands. See what doesn’t. Start small, test the waters—and let the brand grow naturally from there.
A great brand grows exponentially over time.
It’s not rocket science. Think about the brands you love right now. Most of them didn’t blow up overnight through insane marketing budgets. Their product did the talking. And they knew how to communicate what they were about.
